Rules

ELIGIBILITY

To be considered for an Iowa Motion Picture Award:

  • You must have been an Iowa resident, production company or production department between January 1st and December 31st, 2011.
  • The entry must have been completed between January 1st, 2011 and March 9th, 2012.
  • You must possess creative control of the submitted work, or must have written approval from the appropriate individual or entity.
  • At least fifty percent (50%) of the total budget of the submitted entry has to have been spent in Iowa.

ENTRY DEADLINES

Early Entry Deadline – Postmarked on or before February 23rd, 2012 or hand-delivered to the IMPA offices by 5 p.m.
Final Entry Deadline – Postmarked no later than March 9th, 2012 or hand-delivered to the IMPA offices by 5 p.m.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • All entries must be on DVD in NTSC video format.
  • Submit one DVD-R NTSC for all categories, except “Documentary,” “Entertainment Short” and “Entertainment Long,” which each require five DVDs per category.
  • Please make sure that your DVD plays back on multiple players in addition to the recorder/player on which it was made. DVDs that don’t play during judging will be disqualified.
  • Separate DVDs for separate categories – Submit enough DVDs of your work to cover each category you are entering. One DVD NTSC is required for all categories, except “Documentary,” “Entertainment Short” and “Entertainment Long.” These require five DVDs per category.
  • Please remember only 10 minutes of your work is guaranteed to be judged. If your piece is longer than 10 minutes, you are not required to edit your program before submitting it.
  • If you are entering work in a category where just a portion of your work will be judged (i.e. – music, sound effects, actor, actress, etc.), your entry must be edited to specifically highlight the work that’s being reviewed in that category (up to 10 minutes will be judged). For example, if you are submitting a feature length piece in the “Actor” category, don’t submit the entire 90-minute film and hope the judges will know who “the actor” in question is. Rather, edit up to 10 minutes of your project on your DVD (multiple segments adding up to 10 minutes or less are okay, however try to include at least one complete scene if possible). In your entry, there should be no doubt about the identity of the actor/actress, or the exact nature of your entry.
  • Select a 10-second cut of your project you’d like played at the awards ceremony. On your entry, please indicate which 10-second sample of your entry you would like to have played to represent your work in the event that your entry is chosen as a winner.  You have a couple options for doing this:

1. Provide an edited 10-second clip (either as a separate chapter on your entry DVD, or on a separate DVD).

2. On your entry form, write the beginning and ending points of your 10-second clip, using the time code on your DVD.

  • If you’re entering work in multiple categories, be sure to include one 10-second clip for each category you’re entering and give each a title that corresponds to the category. For example, these could be titled, “10-Second Highlight – Entertainment – Long Form” and “10-Second Highlight – Actress.”
  • The IMPA assumes no liability for any entry. Entrants are responsible for all applicable rights and permissions.
  • The IMPA reserves the right to refuse entries and refund fees at its discretion.
  • Each DVD should contain only one entry.
  • DVDs will not be returned.

JUDGING

  • There are up to two rounds of judging.
  • In the primary round, members of Iowa's production community screen all of the entries and select nominees.
  • The entries are rated on how well they achieve their stated objectives, as well as their creative and technical elements relative to the category.
  • Entries will be judged according to guidelines developed by industry professionals in each discipline and are available for review upon request.
  • If necessary, an additional round of judging of selected entries will draw upon an additional group of industry professionals.
